As you may already know I’m from San Diego. San Diego, California is a huge place for traffic because there are so many highways and freeways. Unfortunately, the city shares freeways with Los Angeles, so traffic is even worse than most other cities in the nation. Most local residents know how to get around the traffic or at least avoid it, but outsiders are usually overwhelmed by the sheer amount of cars on the rod. Obviously, rush hour traffic exists in the mornings and afternoons on almost every day.

There are well-over 10 freeways and highways in San Diego County, but some of them are much worse than others. For instance, the Interstate 5 and Interstate 15 are the two most crowded freeways in the county during rush hour. The Interstate 8 and Interstate 805 aren’t much better either. All drivers will want to avoid these freeways at any cost during the early morning and mid-afternoon. So then, don’t make the mistake of being on these roadways at the wrong time.

Traffic times in San Diego County vary greatly. Of course, the busiest freeways can have traffic times of an hour or more easily if the roads are packed bumper-to-bumper. The Interstate 15 has the worst waiting times during traffic, so this freeway should be avoided most of the time – if possible. Luckily, lesser freeways usually only have traffic commute times of 30 minutes or less.

Sadly, accidents can turn waiting times into hours in some cases. The Interstate 15 will sometimes have all lanes closed due to an accident, which can back up traffic for hours on end. Freeways in San Diego regularly have accidents, but they usually aren’t bad enough to cause major traffic delays. Still, San Diego has enough people in it to where accidents are fairly common.

Over a million people live in San Diego County. A lot of these people drive on the freeways on a regular basis, so nobody should underestimate traffic in the city and county.Regularly, the main streets and highways are packed to the point where minor to severe traffic can occur without warning. Sometimes, traffic just can’t be avoided.

Protecting your automobile from being vandalized or stolen is no easy task. Today there is an automobile stolen or vandalized approximately every 10 seconds. Thieves find large lucrative venues for your cars parts and components. In today’s times of economic hardship and distressed economy, the attractiveness of a thief to steal your auto is high. Below are some very simple but proven effective ways to minimize the chance to your auto becoming one of these statistics?

• Always park your auto near the entrance of a building this allows for more visibility of the auto and lessens the chance of the thief from having a clear unobstructed opportunity to gain entry to the vehicle.

• If your budget or car does not allow for an alarm systems, invest in what is called a steering wheel club. The unit keeps a thief from driving off with your auto by locking the steering wheel in a position that doesn’t allow the auto to be maneuvered. This is a highly rated device and can save you thousands. Of course this something insurance companies will ask you about when you are shopping around for cheap insurance quotes.

• Always activate your alarm if applicable when leaving vehicle, remember a moment or two is all a thief needs to steal your auto.

• Always roll up and secure all windows before exiting vehicle.

• Lock all doors and compartments such as tool racks trunks etc.

• Remove all visible electronic devices such as radar detectors, GPS, laptops, DVD players or anything that may attract a thief’s eye to vandalize your auto. Lock these items in your trunk when applicable. Leaving valuable items out for a clear view can be just the enticement a car thief needs to steel your auto.

• Never drive to a location where you will be parking your vehicle while playing loud music that can be heard outside of vehicle. A thief that is on the prowl looks for these telltale signs of a vehicle equipped with a high end audio system.

• Never place a spare key in a magnetic box that is hidden under your fender wells or other places most thief’s know all too well about this item.

These are basic and simple precautions that any automobile owner should follow. The simplicity of these suggestions however will add a strong chance that you will not become a victim of an auto thief.

Automobiles have been part of the American dream since the earliest part of the Twentieth century. Since the birth of motorized transportation in the late nineteenth century several hundred car companies have come and gone. From the 1950’s through the late 1970s the British invasion of open air roadsters was taking place in the United States.

Many British car companies offered drivers around the world the option of purchasing a small convertible roadster with seating usually for only two persons. One common theme was that these cars were fun to drive and put a smile on the face of the drivers, passengers and those who saw them pass by. Most of these manufacturers have disappeared today and the era of the British invasion is only a memory for most persons.

Morris Garage

Morris Garage or MG as it was known during most of its history produced classic British Roadsters for several decades. From the iconic T series that began production in the 1940s through the letter series cars of the sixties and seventies MG was the manufacturer that put the British Roadster on the worldwide market. Early T series cars with rearward opening doors and the classic long hood and short tail were the first British roadsters offered around the world. This series was replaced by the MGA in 1956. The A came as a convertible or hardtop. With features such s removable side curtains and a twin cam motor this model set the bar for the roadster class. The A was followed by the MGB in 1962. The B continued on through 1981 when MG stopped worldwide sales. An MGC, powered by a six cylinder engine, was briefly offered in the late 1960s also.

Triumph

Although not as popular as MG the Triumph cars offered open motoring in the classic British style. The early TR 3 resembled the MG T series. In 1961 the TR4 made its debut, followed by the TR4 A or 5 in many markets that featured independent rear suspension for the first time on a small sports car. Triumph’s sales leader was the TR-6 which was produced between 1969 and 1976. This was a straight six powered car that provided good speed and handling characteristics. The 6 was replaced by the Wedge shaped TR7. The model was first introduced in 1974 and continued on until 1981 when Triumph retreated from the world market. A limited edition TR8, with an American V8 was produced from 1979 to 1981 also.

Although MG and Triumph were the main competitors in the British invasion several other car companies also offered models of this type.

As European and British sports cars evolved in the 1960s the American market took a different route to performance. The lightweight British sports roadsters and German sports coupes offered an alternative to the American muscle cars that were dominating the “sports car” scene in the United States. As European cars became lighter with small engines American muscle cars were born as heavyweights with massive eight cylinder motors that produced great amounts of horsepower. Turning and handling were sacrificed at the altar of pure power and straight line acceleration. Eight cylinder engines reached enormous proportions and were fed through carburetors with four, six and even eight barrels pouring gasoline into the combustion chambers of cast iron blocks.

The one attempt America may have had at a smaller and lightweight car quickly turned into a race for horsepower and size as the Mustang grew from a light weight pony car in 1964 to a large engine muscle car by 1968. The United States was on power frenzy and only the biggest and quickest were ready to survive.

General Motors

The chief engineer for Pontiac in the early 1960s was determined to get around the edict from G.M. that the company should not be involved in racing. He, along with a couple f collaborators from design created a formula that would be the beginning of the muscle car era. John Z. DeLorean, later to develop his own sports car, was determined to push Pontiac to the front of the youth market with the GTO. The car was based on the new Pontiac Tempest body but the small 326 cubic inch engine with a small carburetor was replaced with G.M.s 389 cubic inch big block and a multi carburetor set up. The GTO spawned the muscle car era in the United States. General Motors followed with offerings from all of its divisions except Cadillac. Oldsmobile produced the 4-4-2 which boasted a four speed manual transmission, four barrel carburetor and dual exhaust. Buick responded with the Grand Sport or GS that packed the Wildcat engine into the smaller Skylark body style and added rear spoilers, hood scoops and dual exhausts. Chevrolet produced the Chevelle Super Sport and Malibu as well as the Camaro, an answer to Ford’s Mustang.

Ford

At Ford Lee Iacocca, later to be chairman of Chrysler, produced the Mustang and then saw it grow from a model powered by a 289 CID two barrel motor to a large muscular car powered by engines as large as 429 cubic inches with multi carburetor setups and large hood scoops to force feed air to the engine.

American cars were on a power diet that would only be sidetracked by a gas crisis in the late 1970s. Only OPEC could stop the crazy power struggle among American car makers.

Win on Sunday; sell on Monday was the mantra of the American auto manufacturers through much of the sixties and seventies. With the American Racing Series beginning to gain some true momentum with televised races and publicity in newspapers and magazines the American motoring public became interested in street going version of the racing cars. The series that would evolve into NASCAR was provided the development for some very interesting road cars. These were cars that were practically identical to the cars raced on Sundays by Richard Petty and the Yarborough brothers. These production cars incorporated the aerodynamic changes that were used on track cars. During the early period of NASCAR development a “stock car” was truly a stock car that could be ordered at a local Ford, Chevrolet or Plymouth dealership on Monday morning.

The Plymouth Superbird and Dodge Daytona
The wing was what truly distinguished this car from all others. The rear airfoil stood several feet above the rear deck of the car. The larger than life wind, partnered with the grafted on nose treatment, made these cars famous. Dealerships were anxious to get in on the popularity of stock car racing and ordered the cars. The Plymouth Superbird was a variant of the Roadrunner while the Daytona was a souped up Dodge Charger. Many of the models sold at dealerships were equipped with the 426 Hemi engine and special carburetors. Although the cars were popular among young drivers the pricing was too high for them and more mainstream purchasers were somewhat taken aback by the overdone body styling. Several Daytonas and Superbirds were deeply discounted to sell. These cars will now command purchase prices easily over $100,000.00 on the auction block.

Mercury Cyclone and Ford King Cobra

Designed to take on the dominating Superbirds and Daytonas on the NASCAR circuit the Mercury and Ford offerings were known as the Torino Talladegas and the Cyclone Spoilers. Some very rare models known as the Cyclone Spoiler II and the King Cobra Torino were produced. In order to get the cars on the track models with limited changes had to be available at Ford and Mercury dealerships.

Much like the offerings from Chrysler Corporation these cars had a sleeker appearance and a rear spoiler to produce down force on the track. It is evident that Ford put more time and development into their cars as the sleeker noses do not appear to be grafted on after thoughts and the headlights appear to be designed into the fenders and front end. Although the King Cobra and the Cyclone Spoiler II were never offered to the public modified versions without the racing engines were offered at Ford and Mercury dealerships as special edition Torinos and Cyclones.
